Presentation

The year 2024 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Jacques Ellul (1912-1994), along the seventieth anniversary of the publication of his masterpiece "The Technological Society" (1954) and the eightieth anniversary of his appointment to the Bordeaux special municipal delegation in 1944. But beyond these three symbolic dates, there are many current reasons to take an interest in Ellul's work : It offers keys to interpreting the dazzling progress of artificial intelligence, the development of NBIC and transhumanism, the ecological crisis, fake news and post-truth, the surveillance and profiling of populations, the omnipresence of social networks, the rise of populism and democratic fatigue, the re-enchantment of the world and the rise of fundamentalism.

As a legal historian with a degree in Roman law, Protestant theologian and ethicist, Jacques Ellul first made a name for himself in the English-speaking world with the publication of The Technological Society (1964). His work on propaganda was a direct continuation of his sociology of the technological phenomenon. His trilogy on revolution and revolt emerged as an original approach to social change, combining human and social sciences with ethical concerns. The author of over sixty-five books, translated into some fifteen languages, and 1,200 articles, Jacques Ellul's analyses continue to provoke reflection and debate, and inspire hundreds of researchers around the world.

This international, multidisciplinary symposium is an exceptional opportunity to witness the vitality of his thought. Has it retained its relevance? In what areas? What should be discarded, modified or retained? How can it be illustrated and extended today?
